What is a Doula?
Today, "doula" refers to trained professionals who provide emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, though the term has expanded to include full-spectrum and end-of-life doulas as well.
At Root & Renew, we believe that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are deeply personal and transformative experiences. A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to individuals and families before, during, and after childbirth.
Doulas do not replace medical providers but instead work alongside them, offering guidance, reassurance, and advocacy to help ensure a positive, empowered birth and postpartum experience. Whether you are planning a natural birth, medicated birth, cesarean, home birth, or hospital birth, a doula provides unwavering support tailored to your unique needs and preferences.

Where does the term "doula" come from?
The term "doula" comes from the Ancient Greek word δούλα (doúla), which means "female servant" or "woman who serves." In its modern context, the word was popularized in the 1970s by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael, who used it to describe supportive women who assisted new mothers with breastfeeding and postpartum care.
